Developmental Milestones from Birth to One Year


Being a human is though and being a parent is a whole different type of something. It is the best feeling in the world knowing that no matter what there is a little human who loves you unconditionally and will be by your side. This also means that us, as parents, will do whatever it is to help them grow up to live in this world. As parents we never stop worrying about them. We are always doubting ourselves and we want to make sure that we can provide for them in any way possible. We are always worrying if we doing the right thing and if their actions is age appropriate. There are so many aspects of development in life that sometimes we do not even think about. We focus sometimes on the simple things; teaching their ABC's. counting, crawling, walking etc. Rem


ember that every child develops at a different pace. Development can also be affected by the child's environment; who is in the home and the space within the home that a child has access to. These are a few developmental milestones that can help guide us in the first year of our little one's life:


Personal Health and Well-Being

  • Grasps and release objects; reach objects

  • Ability to transfer objects from one hand to another, hand to mouth

  • Crawl; sits with support to participate in an activity using hands

  • Pulls up to stand holding a table etc

  • Uses tongue/lips to pull, bite/chew

  • Feeds self with fingers

  • Holds a cup

  • Identify familiar caregivers

  • Seek comfort when upset/distressed

Self Determination

  • Express emotions; joy, fear, anger using body language

  • Cry to indicate personal need (eg. hungry, wet, sleepy)

  • Move away or shake head to communicate no or dislike

  • Look away when over-excited

  • Show preference for objects or people

  • Respond to own name

Communication

  • Turn towards sounds, voices and own name

  • Smile and laugh when looking towards others

  • Use physical movements, gestures and vocalization to communicate, understanding of basic concept

  • Use vocalization and gestures to elicit reactions from others

Social

  • Watch and imitate others

  • Play alongside other children

  • Show interest in the activities of other

  • Engage in pretend play with objects (eg. a block as food)

Functional Academic

  • Engage with a variety of items to produce effects (cause and effect)

  • Imitate gestures and simple actions

  • Reach toward and manipulate items in a functional manner (eg. attempt to turn a page in a book)

  • Demonstrate object permanence (eg. finds items hidden/out of sight)


If at any point you are concerned about your child's development, always seek your family doctor or pediatrician for help and advice. Many times children may be too young to completely diagnose anything because every child is unique and development happens when their minds and body's are ready.
